Adherence to Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care: The Case of Post-Stroke Depression

Context: Canadian best practice recommendations for identification and treatment of post-stroke depression (PSD) have been established, but whether they have been adopted is not known. Objectives: To compare current with recommended best practice. Methods: A retrospective chart review from 5 inpatient rehabilitation programs in Southwestern Ontario was completed and a short online survey addressing current practices, opinions and attitudes regarding PSD conducted. Results: Screening for PSD was documented in 41 of 294 patient records. Of the 41 patients screened, 16 were referred for assessment and 6 diagnosed with PSD. However, 113 patients (38.9%) received pharmacotherapy. Most staff reported having access to the recommendations (75%) and was somewhat aware of recommendations for PSD (70%). Conclusion: A substantial gap exists between current practice and best practice for the identification and treatment of PSD. Respondents expressed positive attitudes toward best practice and identified few barriers suggesting clinicians may be willing to implement the recommendations

The Practice of Local Policymaking: Understanding Decision Maker Roles and Agency in Local Implementation Contexts

This dissertation presents three studies that, collectively, seek to contribute to our understanding of the practice of implementation policymaking grounded in the experience of the practitioner. Herein, policymaking is conceptualized as a shared set of practices enacted by actors purposefully engaged in collective performances. This thesis makes important contributions to the iterative processes of theorizing by advancing knowledge about local policymaking practices in the following ways: 1) creation of the Knowledge Enactment in Practice Settings (KEPS) framework as a guide to assist in the exploration of knowledge-based practices including the co-creation of context; 2) use of new insights informed by the KEPS tool to examine and re-examine existing expectations around collaboration and local governance in implementation policymaking; and 3) a more substantial and nuanced understanding of the experience of decision makers practicing together within co-created settings. In the first of the three papers, an interpretive synthesis included 35 studies that examined local policymaking to create representations of the types and sources of information and knowledge used, and key knowledge-based roles and activities. Based on this synthesis, an original framework (KEPS) was created. The KEPS framework depicted different aspects of the collective knowledge work of local policymakers which are explored in the following papers. The second paper explored the co-creation of practice in a lead-agency dominated setting within a multi-level implementation project in the Province of Ontario. The experience of dominance and the potential for a culture of inequality as well as the importance of balance, flexibility and the development of trust for collaboration are discussed. In the third paper, an exploration of how engaged actors function within the practice setting described in the previous paper highlighted the role of power, resources and hierarchical accountability as well as the importance of meaningful engagement. Together, the three studies demonstrated the use of the KEPS framework in the exploration of knowledge enactment settings. Use of the KEPS framework supports the development of a more nuanced understanding of how engaged, local actors experience practice and highlights the need for greater awareness of the ongoing co-creation of practice settings

SBASI: Actuated pyrotechnic time delay initiator

A precision pyrotechnic time delay initiator for missile staging was developed and tested. Incorporated in the assembly is a single bridgewire Apollo standard initiator (SBASI) for initiation, a through-bulkhead-initiator to provide isolation of the SBASI output from the delay, the pyrotechnic delay, and an output charge. An attempt was made to control both primary and secondary variables affecting functional performance of the delay initiator. Design and functional limit exploration was performed to establish tolerance levels on manufacturing and assembling operations. The test results demonstrate a 2% coefficient of variation at any one temperature and an overall 2.7% coefficient of variation throughout the temperature range of 30 to 120 F. Tests were conducted at simulated operational altitude from sea level to 200,000 feet

Experiences with COVID-19 Among Gig Workers

Largely erased from the conceptual frameworks examining gig work are the voices of workers. This white paper takes a Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) to gig work, seeking to co-create voice infrastructures in partnership with gig workers, attending to the classed, raced, gendered nature of gig work, and the ways in which the structural characteristics of gig work which ingrain precarity are exacerbated by the pandemic. Drawing on 25 in-depth interviews with participants who are currently or have recently worked as rideshare or food delivery gig workers, this report argues that platformed work - organised and mediated through an online platform or app, is structurally distinct from traditional forms of work.fals
